A Gretna woman accused of embezzling more than $4 million from a tobacco and candy business has been sentenced to five years in prison on tax evasion charges.

Caroline Richardson was sentenced Monday in Sarpy County District Court, after pleading guilty to three counts of felony tax evasion. She will be eligible for parole after serving 30 months.

Defense lawyer James Schaefer says he had hoped for probation on the charges.

Richardson is accused of embezzling more than $4 million between 2010 and 2011 from Colombo Candy and Tobacco Wholesale Co, a company she worked for. Colombo declined to press charges against Richardson, but state and county officials pushed forward.

Richardson also faces theft charges in Douglas County in relation to the case.
