Four years ago, Colleen Wuebben came up with the idea for a skate-a-thon at UNMC to raise money for Parkinson's research.

She has since lost her battle. But her husband, Ted, says the idea has taken off. "(It's) the awareness... and people knowing about the med center's Parkinson's program," he explained. "And also, people are becoming aware of how much exercise will help people with Parkinson's."

The skate-a-thon starts Friday at noon at the UNMC ice rink, continuing for 24 hours. Some are planning to skate for the entire event. Past skate-a-thons have raised more than $110,000.
