State Reading, Math And Science Scores Improving

Nebraska officials are reporting a slight increase in the percentage of students who met or exceeded math and reading proficiency standards.

The Nebraska Department of Education on Tuesday released the results of this year's statewide exams in reading, science and math.

According to the department, 71 percent of students met or exceeded Nebraska's proficiency standards for math this year. That's an increase from 69 percent in 2013.

The department says 72 percent of students met or exceeded science standards, up from 70 percent last year. For reading, the percentage of students held steady at 77 percent.

About 157,000 students took this year's exams. State Education Commissioner Matthew Blomstedt says Nebraska schools have shown solid gains in the last few years, but the assessments are only one measure of student progress.
