Five people were hospitalized, including three Irvington volunteer firefighters, when a car struck an ambulance at 78th and Sorenson Parkway around 1:00 Thursday afternoon.
Assistant Fire Chief Kyle Tonnies says his crew was rushing a cardiac patient to Immanuel Hospital with lights and sirens and had the green light.
He says the ambulance driver tried to take evasive action as a westbound car crossed the center line and hit the rescue squad head on.
Tonnies says the three firefighters did not suffer serious injuries and are in stable condition. The condition of the cardiac patient and the other driver are not known. Omaha Police are investigating.
