Battalion Chief Tim McCaw says a cigarette on a second floor balcony sparked the two-alarm fire in building G of Scott Village.

McCaw says the fire was originally believed to have started on the 3rd floor.

The blaze broke out Wednesday around 3:15 p.m.

The firefighter who was injured at the scene was Jim Pingel.  He was treated and released at nearby hospital for a leg injury.

The fire displaced nearly 50 students.

Dan Shipp, Vice Chancellor of student affairs, tells Newsradio 1110 KFAB that building inspectors will determine how soon students can get inside building G to try and salvage and personal items.

For now they are assisting them and their families with whatever they need.
