A day at the beach has been the death of many a smart phone. Salt water, sand, and suntan lotion are all enemies of technology. Here's how you can actually bring your device in your beach bag without shelling out way too much money for a new phone on your way back home:

  • Invest in a waterproof case: There are plenty on the market that will protect your device from wet fingers and unexpected splashes. Depending on your needs, some will even survive getting dropped right in the water.
  • Waterproof does not mean sand-proof: Sand in a phone's crevices is bad news. Designate a special plastic pouch, like a make-up or pencil case, that is just for your phone – even a ziplock bag will do in a pinch.
  • Don't leave your phone in the sun: If you leave it in the sun it will get hot enough to overheat and kill your battery. Only use your phone in the shade, and if it's still way too hot stick it in the cooler for a few minutes ... in a waterproof case in its own baggie, of course! (Shine)
