Volunteers have rescued close to 230 prairie dogs that came under threat after Doane University sold its research lab.
Farmers were planning on disposing of the animal colony after the university sold land in Fillmore County to soybean farmers back in April.
However, the Nebraska Wildlife Rehabilitation and Audobon of Kansas trapped and relocated the prairie dogs to a wildlife sanctuary near the Niobrara River.
Nebraska Wildlife will keep about 50 prairie dogs at its Fort Calhoun facility until August.
