The Omaha Police Department announced a breakthrough in a homicide case that has been cold for more than seven years.
The Omaha Police Homicide Unit Cold Case Squad has arrested Bernard Turner, 25, officials announced Friday morning (December 18).
Turner is accused of killing Julius Vaughn on October 18, 2013. Vaughn was 19 at the time of the murder. It happened at 3219 S. 23rd St., according to an Omaha Police Department press release. Officials issued a warrant for Turner on November 12, following “extensive follow up by the OPD Cold Case Squad.”
Authorities found Turner in Arizona, where he was being held on unrelated charges, according to the release. Turner was extradited to Omaha on Thursday (December 17). He’s been booked into the Douglas County Corrections facility and faces one count of first-degree murder in Vaughn’s death.
"The importance of continuing to work on these cases, and having the community's help is crucial,” Deputy Chief Ken Kanger said in the release. “It is extremely important to hold individuals responsible for these heinous acts. We will always continue to work hard for the families and the community and want them to know we are doing all we can to solve these cases.”
