Do you have a favorite place to walk?
While there are a handful of picturesque trails scattered throughout Nebraska, only one is revered as the best place to hike.
Be it beautiful lake views, a glimpse at a glowing sunset sinking below a distant mountain range, or a birds-eye view of the sunrise making the dew painted on the leaves of a hundred trees sparkle around you, something about this trail sets it apart from the rest, so much so, that it's become a Nebraska recommendation.
Some trails are traversed for their history, while others are admired for their peaceful lack of crowds. Regardless of why you choose to hike a trail, there is one glorious Nebraska gem you must add to your list!
According to a list compiled by Backpacker Magazine, the best hike in Nebraska is the 3-mile Nebraska National Forest at Halsey trail.
Here's what Backpacker Magazine (via hiker Adam Roy) had to say about the absolute best place to hike in the state:
"Located near the town of Halsey, the forest’s 141-square-mile Bessey Ranger District is an offbeat, surprisingly wild destination, and with next to no trails, it’s up to you to choose your own adventure. Start on the only marked hiking path in the area, a sandy, 3-mile-long trail winding over the hilltops and past snatches of prairie. At the end, climb to the top of Scott Fire Tower, a 50-foot-high observation post that’s still in use, and scope out your route. From there, you can link together cattle paths and old forest roads around towering ponderosas and through patches of grazed-down grassland, topping off your water at windmill-festooned cattle tanks dotted around the forest."
