At a school near Pittsburgh, about 70% of students come from low-income families. Renting a violin for the year? That’s hundreds of dollars most families just don’t have.

But the superintendent wasn’t about to let that stop the music.

She started using 3D printers to make violins—yes, plastic ones. They’re surprisingly decent for beginners, and they only cost around $50 each to produce. Over the past five years, she’s printed more than 200 of them.

It’s a creative fix that’s giving kids access to music education they wouldn’t otherwise get. And honestly? It’s kind of brilliant.
