Chocolate and cheese don’t usually get framed as health food. But a new study suggests they might not deserve the side‑eye they usually get.
Researchers followed more than three million people and found something surprising. People who ate more chocolate, cheese, and fermented dairy like yogurt tended to live longer. They also had lower death rates from heart disease.
The explanation is fairly simple. Some of these foods support gut health. Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria. Chocolate, especially darker varieties, includes compounds linked to heart health.
That does not mean everything fermented made the cut. Sourdough bread and miso did not show the same benefits in this research.
Sugar still plays a big role. Many chocolate products are packed with it, which cancels out any upside pretty quickly.
